Nationally, the average pet owner spends about $2,100 a year their dog, according to a 2005 survey by the APPMA. Among the fastest growing segments are services and supplies, where spending reached $11.2 billion in 2005. APPMA's National Pet Owners Survey shows 27 percent of dog parents buy their pets birthday presents, and 55 percent of dog parents buy their pet holiday presents.
