Why is Internet Safety Important? Police Officer Reveals Answer in New Student Safety Books
Marina Del Rey, CA (PRWEB) September 23, 2008 -- "Student Safety Tips (http://www.StudentSafetyTips.com)" is a series of important new books aimed at helping K-12 students protect themselves from internet predators and stranger danger. Written by Tony Newsom, Los Angeles Police Officer and student safety expert, the simple, easy to follow tips empower students to make safe decisions. Newsom has nearly 30 years experience in keeping students safe.
According to the National Center for Education (http://nces.ed.gov/programs/crimeindicators/crimeindicators2007/), in one recent year, among students 12-18 years of age, there were 628,200 victims of violent crimes. Just last week, a man was arrested in Moorepark, CA for "abducting a 13 year old girl (http://www.ktla.com/landing_topstories/?Cops-SoCal-Man-Held-13-year-old-Girl-as-=1&blockID=60627&feedID=1198)" an keeping her as his sex slave for three months.
What about internet crimes? Did you know that many Internet predators diligently spend three to six months searching children and teenager's MySpace, FaceBook and other online profiles prior to ever making email contact with them?
Why is Internet Safety Important? As you have seen on the news and television shows like "To Catch a Predator" & "Oprah," Internet predatory has grown out of control. Legislation is currently attempting to pass bills to crack down on Internet predators. That is only part of the solution, says Tony. Tony says, "If we fail to simultaneously teach our children and teenagers how to stay safe, we are leaving the door wide open for new predators to walk in and to pick up where the arrested ones left off. When students transition into elementary, middle and high school, they need an entirely new set of safety tips. Unfortunately, we spend less time preparing our students to stay safe, then most predators spend grooming them."
Newsom has decided enough is enough. His new books, "Student Safety Tips (http://www.StudentSafetyTips.com)" provides a list of age appropriate, modern tips no student should be without. Through a series of crime stories told by police officers and candid interviews with convicted criminals, the books teach students how to avoid becoming victims in a variety crime. In each book, Newsom has included homework assignments to help the students retain what they learn. Newsom has also authored "The Parent's Guide For Raising Safer K-12 Students (http://www.studentsafetytips.com/parent.html)" to teach parents what they can do to keep their children safe online as well as off line.
In a special online report, Newsom also provides educators and parent with 5 Safety Tips that can make the difference between their students/children avoiding and becoming the victim of the various mentioned crimes. Schools everywhere are encouraged to provide a web link for their educators and parents to explore this indispensable report at http://www.StudentSafetyNews.com/bts.pdf. The safety tips in Newsom's report were all taken from his Student Safety Tips books. Tony's elementary; parent books and special safety report are also available in Spanish.
In October, Tony Newsom will begin his 2008-2009 School Safety Tour. His goal is to directly help four schools per month to radically increase the safety of their students by implementing these safety tips into their existing classrooms. If you would like to schedule Tony for a speaking engagement for your educators or a safety consultation, please call (800) 584-2449.
