The Future Internet Symposium 2008 Vienna, Austria 28-30 September 2008

Vienna, Austria (PRWEB) August 18, 2008 -- The Future Internet Symposium (http://www.fis2008.org/) (FIS) - to be held 28-30 September 2008 in Vienna, Austria - is a venue for European and international researchers to share their work on next generation Internet technologies. FIS is a scientific forum for the European Union's Future Internet Initiative, an effort to align European Internet research on the shared challenges presented by Europe's increasingly Internet-based society and economy. FIS is intended to bridge traditional disciplinary boundaries of Internet research, emphasizing the use of machine understandable semantics to enable diverse communities, devices, and organizational groupings to share Internet resources. The symposium is organized by Semantic Technology Institute International (STI International), the Vienna-based hub of a worldwide network of renowned academic and industrial research groups working on semantic technologies, with support of the Austrian Computer Society.

Keynote speaker Joao da Silva, head of the `Network and Communication' section in the European Commission's Information Society Directorate. Joao oversees the EU's Framework 7 research on mobile communications, broadband networks including satellite communications, audio-visual and home networks, trust and security, software engineering, and ICT for business applications.

We are pleased to announce William H. Dutton as a keynote speaker of FIS. He is Director of the Oxford Internet Institute and Professor of Internet Studies at the University of Oxford.

Invited paper `Internet of Things in an Enterprise Context' Stephan Haller is a senior researcher in the Smart Items research program at SAP Research, Zurich. He leads the SENSEI project, integrating wireless sensor networks into the network, and is heavily involved in international RFID standardization.

Workshops 29 September

OneSpace: Blending physical and digital spaces on the Internet The Internet reshapes our perception of place and time: micro-blogging induces new notions of spatial and social proximity; users spend ever more time in virtual worlds like Second Life; the Global Positioning System and Web mapping technologies blur the boundaries between spatial representation and perception. This workshop will cover recent developments in this area, examining representations of physical/virtual spaces and topologies, the 3- and 4-D Internet, geo-located services and sensors, `Sense of place and presence', and mobility.

Complex Event Processing for the Future Internet Today's Internet is primarily a passive one, where most actions are initiated by a user. A Future Internet will be active, with software acting and reacting to events without human intervention. This requires new models, methods and tools for dealing efficiently with complex events, covering their representation, acquisition, aggregation and consumption. Especially important is the processing of events with better abstraction, combining them in a specific context: time, space, semantics - so called complex event processing (CEP).

Tutorials 28 September

Triple Space Computing: Large-Scale Integrated Knowledge Applications Triple Space Computing is a novel 'space based' approach to large-scale knowledge distribution and coordination. This tutorial introduces the concept and existing implementations, and gives a concrete demonstration based on a Digital Asset Marketplace for a telecommunications company. Attendees get hands-on experience with a Triple Space kernel, and learn how to apply it as communication and coordination middleware for their Semantic Web applications.

Beyond Google Earth: Surfing Petabyte Maps in the Future Internet Satellite imagery applications like Google Earth are a powerful and integral part of the Internet experience. This tutorial presents the state of the art in semantic Web services for Terabyte scale multidimensional raster data from applications spanning CAT scans, geological exploration, and climate and cosmology simulations. The tutorial covers raster services, addressing modelling, architecture, optimization, and storage management. Applications in geo- and life-sciences and the Grid will be emphasized. Real-life use-cases are drawn from scientific projects and standardization efforts in the Open GeoSpatial Consortium (www.opengeospatial.org).

Agile Future Internet Applications: An Introduction to Emerging Data, Service, and Process

Technologies Much of today's software is not installed on users' computers, but accessed as an online service. This tutorial covers the technologies that enable this: the standard protocols (HTTP), data formats (XML, RDF, and OWL), application interfaces (SOAP, REST), and business process models (BPEL and BPMN), and provides a new perspective on how to assemble them. We introduce emerging technologies with large potential for future Internet services.

Semantic Management of Business Processes in the Future Internet The tutorial explains and demonstrates how the combination of Business Process Management (BPM) and Semantic Web Services (SWS) technologies can contribute to the vision of Internet of Services and multi-partner processes. It presents the state of the art in the areas of BPM and SWS, motivating the need for explicit use of semantics to overcome future Internet challenges. A technical framework integrating SWS and BPM will be demonstrated.
