Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 8, 2008 -- The education and technology company Pearson has named Peter Cohen as Chief Executive Officer of its U.S. School Curriculum Group (http://www.pearsonschool.com), the market leader in elementary and secondary school publishing.
Cohen will oversee Pearson's preK through high school publishing enterprises in print and digital education. Over the past year, Pearson's leading position has been enhanced by the success of its innovative blended text and digital elementary program enVisionMATH, the top-selling mathematics curriculum in the U.S.
As Cohen takes on his new responsibilities, he is moving forward Pearson's primary mission of creating ground-breaking solutions that will advance student achievement. Pearson's (http://www.pearsonschool.com) focus is reflected in its research and in the development of programs across the school enterprise - providing rich and engaging content in print and digital formats, personalized learning, embedded intervention, and assessment for learning. In addition to its continued investment in quality instruction for schools, Pearson maintains a steadfast commitment to professional development for teachers, helping them to maximize their potential as well as that of their students.
Will Ethridge, Chief Executive Officer, Pearson North America, said, "The opportunities and challenges in education have never been greater, and we are looking forward to Peter's leadership as we navigate our transformation from textbook publishing to providing innovative and comprehensive educational services and solutions to schools around the world. Cohen was previously Chief Executive Officer of the education services company Educate, Inc., whose businesses and brands include Sylvan Learning Centers, Hooked on Phonics, Educate Online, Catapult Learning, as well as learning companies outside the U.S. Before assuming the CEO role, Cohen was president of Sylvan Learning Centers and its predecessor, Sylvan Learning Systems. Under his leadership, revenues grew from $160 million to $514 million. He was part of the senior executive team at Sylvan Learning that split the business into two separate companies: Educate, the K-12 focused company, which Cohen led, and Laureate, a leader in the post-secondary company.
Cohen is a graduate of the University of Redlands. He serves on the Board of Directors of Connections Academy, a for-profit virtual charter school company.
