IESE Professor Pankaj Ghemawat Wins the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management
Anaheim, CA (PRWEB) August 13, 2008 -- The Business Policy and Strategy Division (http://www.bpsdiv.org) of the Academy of Management (http://www.aomonline.org) presented the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award yesterday evening to noted author and IESE Professor Pankaj Ghemawat (http://www.ghemawat.org) at a symposium and reception during the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The Teaching Committee of The Business Policy and Strategy Division said they chose Ghemawat due to his "exemplary record as an educator and extensive contributor to the teaching effectiveness of others through myriad teaching materials."
The two primary criteria of the Irwin Award are: (1) Demonstrated outstanding teaching capabilities in business strategy over a long period of time; and (2) Had an important impact on strategy pedagogy through demonstrated expertise or by developing new and different teaching methods or materials that were subsequently widely adopted by others. "Ghemawat has excelled along both dimensions throughout his career," noted the committee, which consisted of Melissa Appleyard, Chair (Portland State U.), Ilgaz Arikan (Georgia State), Moshe Farjoun (York University), and Larry Stimpert (Colorado College).
The Business Policy and Strategy Division has over 5,300 members and is one of the largest divisions of the Academy of Management (which has more than 18,000 members). About Pankaj Ghemawat
Indian-born Pankaj Ghemawat is the Anselmo Rubiralta Professor of Global Strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. He was previously the Jaime and Josefina Chua Tiampo Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Professor Ghemawat earned his A.B. degree in Applied Mathematics from Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and his Ph.D in Business Economics from Harvard University. He then worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in London before joining the Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty in 1983. In 1991 at age 23, he was appointed the youngest full professor in HBS's history. He joined the IESE faculty in 2006.
He has written for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times and one of his Harvard Business Review articles won their award for best article published in 2005. He has been featured in Harvard Business School's Faculty Seminar Series: "Great Ideas from Business Thought Leaders."
Professor Ghemawat's current teaching and research focus on globalization and strategy. He has developed a 30-session MBA course on the topic, chairs focused programs at IESE and at HBS on Getting Global Strategy Right, and has written more than 50 articles and case studies on the topic. His "Regional Strategies for Global Leadership" received the McKinsey Award for the best article published in the Harvard Business Review (HBR) in 2005. Other recent globalization-related publications include "Managing Differences: The Central Challenge in Global Strategy," the lead article in the March 2007 issue of HBR, "Why the World Isn't Flat" in the March/April 2007 issue of Foreign Policy, and "Global Integration ` Global Concentration" (with Fariborz Ghadar), the lead article in the August 2006 issue of Industrial and Corporate Change. Professor Ghemawat's book, synthesizing and extending his work in this area, Redefining Global Strategy, was published by Harvard Business School Press in September 2007.
Praise for Redefining Global Strategy by Pankaj Ghemawat:
"Pankaj Ghemawat has created an important strategic guidebook for leaders of the 21st century globally integrated enterprise. His analytic framework is both visionary and pragmatic - aware of the broader historic trajectories of globalization, but grounded in the real kinds of decisions business leaders have to make in the here and now. And his caveats about 'semiglobalization' provide a salutary reminder that massive change of this kind doesn't happen overnight. By basing his analysis on real-world case studies and a mastery of economic data, Pankaj Ghemawat will help CEOs and leaders of institutions make smarter decisions on one of the most important challenges we all face."
--Samuel J. Palmisano, the Chairman and CEO of IBM:
"This book deserves to be a bestseller." - The Economist
"Pankaj Ghemawat amasses data to show that even now, globalization has profound, and most likely enduring, limits?.The combination of case studies and stentorian common sense culminates in a nicely revised picture of globalization as regionalization."
- The New York Times
Pankaj Ghemawat's other books include Commitment, Games Businesses Play and Strategy and the Business Landscape. In addition, he is one of HBS's 10 best-selling case writers, serves as the Departmental Editor for Strategy at Management Science and, in 2007, was elected a fellow of the Academy of International Business
