Vacation Travel Trends Show More Families Seek Learning Experiences This Summer

Kure Beach, N.C. (PRWEB) July 30, 2008 -- Today's families are looking for more out of their vacations than just relaxing at the beach. Increasingly, they are looking to add educational options as part of the package. One of the best spots to combine fun in the sun and learning is Kure Beach, a town that offers both unspoiled beaches and rich historical attractions.

TripAdvisor.com recently surveyed 2,500 travelers and found that 32 percent were planning to include some educational activities as part of their time off this year. This interest in so-called "learning vacations" is up seven percent from last year.

That's good news for destinations like Kure Beach. The family-friendly town offers all the usual fun of an oceanfront resort. There are the usual opportunities to relax on uncrowded beaches, catch that perfect wave or do a little fishing.

But vacationing at Kure Beach also gives vacationers the chance to take home more than the usual beachwear souvenirs. This is a town rich with history. Vacationers can explore Fort Fisher State Historic Site & Civil War Museum which is home to the largest earthen for in the South. The North Carolina Military History Museum has a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits encompassing all branches of the military. The North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Center provides exhibits on dive sites and maritime history dating from prehistoric to Civil War to present and, the N.C. Aquarium, showcases marine life in the Cape Fear River basin and the nearby beaches, estuaries and ocean.

Although summer is nearly over, there is still time to take the family to a memorable location where they can both relax and learn.

In addition to the museums that are open every day, Kure Beach offers special events in both August and September. On August 9th, "Toys, Games & More" at Fort Fisher, will educate participating children about Civil War era games and toys as the kids actually become part of the festivities. And on September 6th, Fort Fisher will present the "End of the Summer Artillery Program" complete with re-enactors in Civil War attire firing the vintage cannons.
