Take on the Picky Eater in Your Family with Advice from Grandma
(PRWEB) April 2, 2008 -- Encouraging healthy eating habits can be a constant battle when picky eaters are involved. Children's nutrition expert Grandma Bev Grey offers fun ways to get your child to eat veggies, even the green ones, in her article, 8 Tips for Dealing with a Picky Eater, which is available for immediate download at www.grandmashealthykidsclub.com.
If your picky eater limits his or her diet to foods high in fat, sugar and processed ingredients, that child is more likely to be or become obese, warns Grey. Giving your child a whole new outlook on healthy foods is all you need to ensure wholesome choices at mealtimes. Grey advises parents to get children involved by making the act of trying new food fun and exciting, and offers a few helpful tips for changing food tastes without a major battle.
According to Grey, you can change your child's attitude about healthy food with some easy strategies.
"Turn mealtime into a challenge," says Grey. "For instance, the first person at the table who finishes their broccoli gets to choose a board game for the family to play after dinner." She adds, "Be sure to serve one meal for the whole family, and do not allow your child to eat a different meal because of certain food dislikes."
Another tip from Grey suggests that parents educate children about food in fun ways, such as learning to cook or surfing the Web to learn about different foods and the food groups represented. Children will enjoy spending time with their parents, no matter what the activity.
"Take your child grocery shopping with you," says Grey, "with the task of picking out one new fruit, vegetable or dairy product for the family to try. Do some research on the Internet to learn all about the chosen food and how it adds to better health."
For more tips on turning your picky eater into a healthy eater check out books titled Winning the Food Fight by Dr. Joey Shulman and Conquering Childhood Obesity for Dummies by Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD,LD; Meghan Beecher, and Michelle Hagen. Both books are available at www.grandmashealthykidsclub.com/books.
Bev Grey is founder and president of Grandma's Healthy Kids Club, a Web site that offers age-appropriate weight loss programs and other items for children and adults. She is also author of "The Project," a fictional story for children or adults who work with children, and "Ending the Cycle of Obesity," an e-book containing several articles she has written about healthy living and childhood obesity.
