The Villages at Carver Family YMCA Adopts Musical Mathematics for Youth Enrichment Program

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) January 17, 2008 -- Educational Dynamix, an educational services firm that focuses on the learning and development of educators and children through innovative and engaging programs and services, announced today that the Villages at Carver Family YMCA will begin using the Musical Mathematics® Nurturing Children Learning program as part of their curriculum for students in Carver's Youth Enrichment Program.

The Musical Mathematics®: Nurturing Children Learning program is a system of teaching and learning which includes multimedia songs and visual images, teaching tools and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards-based instructional materials, and draws on a strong correlation between mathematics and music to help students learn.

"We've initiated this program as a community-based collaborative between The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta and Educational Dynamix to provide children with the opportunity to learn and apply mathematics in engaging and informative ways," explained Dr. Clemmie Whatley, founder of Educational Dynamix.

Carver Family YMCA was one of the first members of the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta to pilot the Musical Mathematics®: Nurturing Children Learning program in 2007.

"In the past after school programs taught math from a traditional standpoint," stated Jervonia L. Melton, Child Services Director for Carver Family YMCA. "With Musical Mathematics, we're adding a new facet to the program to give our students a new perspective and advanced approach to mathematics."

Students in the Carver YMCA Youth enrichment program attend Slater and Dobbs Elementary school where more than 90% of students qualify for free or discounted lunches. After school they are bused to the YMCA where they get help with their homework and participate in recreational, cultural and self-awareness activities.

"Approximately 65% of the students in our Youth Enrichment program perform at or below where they need to be. Musical Mathematics is one of the tools that we're using to try to right that situation," concluded Melton.

Educational Dynamix will partner with the YMCA to implement the program for grades K-5. A professional development training session for Carver Instructors kicks off the 12-week learning program on February 2, 2008.

The Villages at Carver Family YMCA is the 23rd addition to the Metro Atlanta YMCA and one of only a few Leaderships in Environmental and Educational Design (LEED) buildings in the association. Located on Pryor Road, in the heart of an underserved, low-income community, The Villages at Carver YMCA is a collaborative effort between the Metro Atlanta Association and the historic Butler Street Association, which had existed independently and exclusively of one another. Heretofore, the Butler Street YMCA was the association that served the African-American community in Atlanta during segregation. Butler Street remained a driving force in the African-American community even after integration, so when the idea came about to build a new YMCA in an area that was traditionally served by Butler Street, it was decided that a partnership between the two associations would be the best way to effectively serve the community.

The Villages at Carver YMCA is a 55,000 square-feet full-facility that includes a full court basketball gymnasium with a suspended track, family aquatics center, complete with a whirlpool and steam room, multi-purpose rooms, cardiovascular center, and childcare while you work out!
