The family that swims together stays together. Well, it isn?t that simple, but family activities can strengthen relationships and lead to an overall healthier family environment. Enjoying swimming is just one of many things that a family can choose to do together.

Many health clubs and YMCAs offer planned swimming programs for all ages as well as dedicated times for families to be in the pool together, regardless of swim skill. Learning swimming skills is important for everyone. Even if you don?t swim recreationally, it is crucial to know how to swim in the event of an emergency.

Policies and safety guidelines vary from one location to the next. Some facilities do not offer refunds so you should choose classes carefully and make sure that they are age appropriate for your child.

Pool rules often require that parents not participating in the class wait in an observation area. This is to keep the pool area less crowded and to allow the children to focus on the class. Other classes are designed for both parent and child. A popular combined class is one where infants and young children learn to swim. The parent and the child are in the pool together and the instructor guides the parent on how to teach the child to swim. This is a great way for the parent and child to bond over a learned skill.

For hygiene reasons swim suits are typically required at all times. Swim caps are also mandatory for everyone. Sometimes there is an exception for young children. Water diapers are required and those requirements can vary. Some require the water diapers for all swimmers age three and under; other require them for any age not bathroom trained. This is a serious health issue and some facilities will even charge parents for the cost of closing the pool for fecal matter. It is important to train children to use the toilet before entering the pool and to leave the pool if they need to use the toilet again.

Most state health departments require that everyone entering the pool must take a shower first. YMCAs and other clubs will have policies in place to ensure this. Most will require that the swimmer be visibly wet before entering the pool. Also for sanitation reasons most pools will have policies prohibiting spitting, blowing your nose in the water or spouting water. People with open sores or infectious diseases are not allowed in the pool.

Additional safety requirements include the walk, don?t run rule, no diving in the shallow end, no food or drink in the pool area and no profanity.

There are a lot of rules in place for swimming at the YMCA or other club. The rules are in place to protect the health and safety of all swimmers. When you follow these rules, everyone in the family can enjoy swimming together. Once you hone your skills at the local pool perhaps the family can enjoy a vacation to the beach or lake and you can swim together as a family.

Swimming is a great form of exercise and one that family members with different skill levels can still enjoy. Even family members who suffer from arthritis and other conditions that limit other activities can participate in swimming. The water is a great environment to protect arthritic joints.
