Mobile Storage Operators Try Different Business Models
Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) September 19, 2007 -- Mobile storage, or portable storage, is a new way to serve the self-storage market. It is not clear, however, which business model will prevail in the long run, according to Steve Wilson, the founder and managing partner of the Hide-Away Storage Services organization, which is based in Sarasota, FL.
Wilson was asked to make the presentation at the annual Self Storage Association national convention in Las Vegas which ran from Sept. 6-8 and review the overall status of the mobile storage, or portable storage industry, which has become quite well known because of the spectacular growth of the PODS franchise system.
Wilson said one business model uses the "small box" approach with portable storage containers which hold 1 to 1½ rooms of furniture. Typically these portable storage containers are stored in a climate controlled warehouse. The other model uses a larger container that generally is nearly the size of a small garage. Many of these larger containers remain on the customer's site or are used for moves from one home to another. These larger containers also can be stored in a warehouse and the most common example of this "big box" model is PODS, according to Wilson's presentation.
Wilson shared the podium for the presentation with Ben Terrell of the Mobile Attic company located in Elba, AL. Mobile Attic focuses on the "big box" business model while Wilson's Hide-Away Storage Services uses the smaller portable storage containers. These smaller containers are delivered on a flat-bed truck and unloaded with a "piggyback forklift" which accompanies the truck.
He said it could end up that both business models prevail in many markets after some initial shakeouts of weaker companies. He said possibly 25% to 40% of current self-storage customers could be better served with some form of mobile storage, or portable storage.
