Is It Really The Case That Stress Detrimental To Our Health?
Doctors have known for many years that stress can affect your health but we are only now beginning to fully understand precisely how stress can affect the body. Many of the myths surrounding the subject of stress, like the fact that stress can produce ulcers, are finally being exposed while others are now being confirmed. Many of the obvious affects of stress such as, headaches, a rapid heartbeat, hypertension, muscle tension and digestive problems are easy to recognize and well known, but there are also a number of longer-term and potentially serious conditions that can result from persistent stress. Studies that have been conducted at the National Institutes of Health and at other institutions for example suggest strongly that stress affects the body's immune system. Interestingly enough these very studies show that the affect can be both good and bad. Given that one particular definition of stress is that it is merely an individual's 'flight or fight' response to a perceived threat, it can have a good affect. It can, for example, set off the release of chemicals which help to heal infections resulting from bites. That makes perfect sense when you think about just how evolution may have tailored the body's immune system to deal with such events. However, when this particular response lasts for a long period of time, the affects can be harmful and one consequence is that the body's immune system becomes less effective resulting in a higher susceptibility to infection and a reduced resistance to flu and other viral illnesses. Yet another consequence is an overall feeling of tiredness and sometimes depression. If a person is stressed for long periods of time then a feedback loop develops between the cause of the stress (the belief that it is not possible to solve the problem that is creating the stress) and the affects. This gives rise to a cycle where the belief becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Chronic stress can also impact your health by compromising you circulatory system. If stress hormones which are released as a result of the 'fight or flight' trigger are not used up by {some form of physical activity such as fighting infection|the physical activity of, for example, fighting infection then they can produce actual physiological stress on the body. High blood pressure increases the pressure on the walls of blood vessels which can lead to small tears arising in the blood vessels. If the body reacts to repair these micro-tears, scar tissue can be produced which decreases the flow of blood through these vessels. When stress levels are extremely high or remain for a long enough period of time a heart attack can occur. The risk of heart attack is also higher in older people or in people who carry certain genetic characteristics. With a narrowing of the blood vessels, the heart might not be able to deliver enough blood and oxygen at moments of high demand. It has also been known for a long time that stress can exacerbate the affects of rheumatoid arthritis and this is now also explained by the affect of stress on the immune system as there is a proven and well documented link between rheumatoid arthritis and the body's immune system. Avoiding stress is vital for all of us to maintain good health and, happily, as we start to gain a clearer understanding of stress we are also developing some very successful techniques for relieving stress.
